“Heather's” story, written/narrated by Laura Burke and illustrated/edited/filmed by Stephanie Young, is part of a collection of narratives gathered for the Forensic Mental Health Success Stories project, which aims to increase understanding and awareness about people who have achieved success after being found ‘Not Criminally Responsible on account of Mental Disorder’ (NCRMD) by a court. Each year, 850 Canadians living with mental illness are found NCRMD. Almost all will return to the community, with upwards of 90% never reoffending. Little is known about the people who succeed. Heather's story portrays one person’s journey after being found 'Not Criminally Responsible'.
