I have lived with mental illness for over 20 years but have rarely spoken about it. Disclosure suggests repercussions. Shame and misunderstanding abound and overwhelm. So as to foster a stronger community which is inclusive and supportive of people with mental illness there needs to be a shift that looks at vulnerability and misplacement as something other than weakness and unsightly mutation.
My drawings and photos are a response to the perplexity of my illness. Exploring concepts of fragility by recalling vulnerable states of decline and recovery, they act both as a restorative and counteracting means of expression.
